Quick Tips

Test Drives

You can most certainly show up to look at any for sale truck you find, however, calling ahead to schedule an appointment for a test drive will be the best way to assure you will be helped quickly. Some of the trucks will require a battery charge and giving that heads up will allow time for the seller to have the truck test drive ready!

Be Prepared and Know the Facts - Title

The title for each truck is held at the Corporate Office in Arizona. After payment has been processed and paperworks has been signed, the license plate on the truck must be pulled off. It typically takes 2-6 days for the title to be sent to a buyer. We suggest leaving the truck on the seller's property until the title is received before taking possession. Some states offer temp tags without the title so long as they are presented a Bill of Sale. Some states do not. You will want to find out your options before purchasing.

Educated Purchase - Sold "AS IS"

U-Haul is committed to helping every prospective buyer find the truck that is just right for them! Whether you want a fixer upper or a truck that is ready to start and drive with minimal maintenance, we will try to meet your needs. Because we sell trucks in various conditions, it's important to point out that we practice full disclosure, that means anything we know, you know! U-Haul is not a car dealership, we are a rental company interested in selling off equipment that is no longer of use to us. When trucks are pulled off the rental fleet and retired to sell, our mechanics do one last inspection of the truck and document the last known condition. The notes of this inspection can be disclosed by the seller for your consideration. We really are at an advantage solely maintaining the fleet and being the only owner. You can ask the seller or print off a Maintenance History Report for a better overall understanding of how the truck has been cared for. Lastly, we encourage you to take the truck to a mechanic for an inspection prior to buying. A "Demonstration Drive Agreement" will allow your mechanic up to twelve hours, free of charge, to perform a thorough inspection.

Negotiating - Making an Offer

After you have done your due diligence on educating yourself about the condition of the truck, you are ready to make an offer. You will want to make your offer in person to the seller who will then call the corporate office. At this time we will discuss the offer. When a price has been agreed upon, we will authorize that seller to sell you the truck.

Registration and Taxes - Additional Fees

Taxes, registration, and fees will vary state by state. Please call Fleet Sales at 1-866-404-0355 to find out what you can expect to pay in addition to the negotiated price.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are happy you are interested in buying a U-Haul truck! Below are some of our most frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer to your questions here, feel free to speak with a Fleet Sales representative who can surely help answer your question. A rep is available seven days/week at 1-866-404-0355

Q: Does U-Haul have a warranty/guarantee?

A: All vehicles are sold "AS IS". For more information please call 1-866-404-0355.

Q: Does U-Haul sell trailers?

A: Yes! U-Haul currently has a limited selection of utility trailers available to purchase. The versatility of these trailers allows you to let your needs be met inexpensively while putting your trust in these high quality pieces of equipment. See detailed description and specification.

Q: How many miles are on your trucks when you retire them?

A: Typically, we retire our trucks because we are getting ready to put new trucks into the rental fleet. Certainly, we will retire some trucks based on current condition, but for the most part, it's because they are simply being replaced.

Q: How much is your cheapest truck?

A: We currently have a little over 5,000 trucks for sale. The cheapest isn't necessarily going to be what you want unless you're looking at using it for storage or advertising. The cheaper they are, chances are pretty good......the more work they will need. Feel free to visit our selection of last chance vehicles.

Q: Do you take payments?

A: No. We will take a deposit to hold the vehicle for a period of 30 days.

Q: Are the prices negotiable?

A: Yes. All asking prices are negotiable. Once you've taken the truck for a test drive and had a mechanic look it over, you can make an offer to the location that has the truck. The seller will reach out to us and we can close a deal out within a matter of minutes.

Q: Does asking price include taxes and fees?

A: The asking price of the truck does not include taxes or fees as these vary by State/Province. Please reach out to the selling location directly for more details or call Fleet Sales at 866-404-0355.

Q: How long should it take for me to get my title?

A: Typically, you should receive your title in 3-7 business days. For states that we complete registration of your vehicle, we issue you a temporary tag and you get your title within 30 days.

Q: Can I buy just the box?

A: U-Haul does not sell the van box by itself.

Q: Does U-Haul donate trucks?

A: Not typically. The ownership of our rental fleet is in the form of a leasing agreement, rather than true ownership. This structure prohibits us from being able to donate. We also receive hundreds of requests on a weekly basis. If we were in a position to be able to donate, it would be difficult for us to decide who is more deserving. If there are any questions, our Public Relations Dept can be reached at 602-263-6194.

Q: Does U-Haul lease their trucks?

A: There is a leasing program available called Patriot Leasing. This program is specifically geared towards customers who are looking to use the truck for storage or advertising. If you are interested in this program, have them contact Patriot Leasing at 877-844-7446.

Q: Does U-Haul finance?

A: No, however we work hand in hand with Alliance Leasing and Financial. Our contact at Alliance is Cindy Adler. Apply online at www.allianceleasing.net/apply-now.html or call 800-449-0674 or 480-951-1848. They finance specifically for business loans in the amount of $5,000 or more. However, you can also seek financing from your local financial institution. We will work with all financing companies.
